Formed in 1975, the Society was largely made up of current and former Club rugby players and other members and associates of the Club.
Successively organised by Jim and Mike Heighway, Ray Prince and Roy Latham, they met twice a year at various Midland golf venues. Highlights were visits to Edgbaston, Hawkstone Park, Moseley and Ross Golf Clubs.
An evening meal, a surfeit of beers and prize presentation completed the day. Was it a coincidence that the introduction of the drink/drive legislation led to the groups demise around 1995?
Later, an annual festive season fourball was established with Dennis Butterworth, Lawrence Cox, Ray Prince and Bob Reynolds (all former School and Rugby Club members).
Following Lawrence's untimely death, Allen Nightingale took his place. Allen was adopted an Honorary Old Salt, much remembered as a drinking and playing member, but also a hilarious contributor to the fabled Cabaret Night. Allen, tragically died on the 17th fairway at Walmley Golf Club on 2nd January, 1994.
In memory of both Lawrence and Allen, Dennis, Bob and Ray set up an annual summer golf day, to be played at Walmley, the initial event being held on 6th August, 1999. That first day comprised a minimum of 9 holes in the morning, a light lunch, followed by an 18 hole Stableford competition in the afternoon. Again, drinks, dinner and a prize giving completed the day.
